The Prague Advanced Technology and Research Innovation Center (PATRIC) is participating in the European AI.grids project, a major initiative focused on the use of artificial intelligence in the management and planning of European power grids. By joining the project consortium, PATRIC becomes part of an international collaboration among power grid operators, research organizations, and technology partners.
The AI.grids project was launched in June 2026 as one of Europe’s flagship initiatives in the field of digitalization and artificial intelligence in the energy sector. Its goal is to create the first pan-European artificial intelligence (AI) foundation model designed for the operation and planning of power systems. Approximately fifty European organizations are involved in the initiative, including transmission and distribution system operators, research institutions, and technology companies.

About the AI.grids Project
AI.grids responds to the rapidly growing demands placed on Europe’s energy infrastructure in connection with the decentralization of electricity generation, the expansion of renewable energy sources, the electrification of transportation, and the overall transformation of the energy sector. The project aims to create a common European framework for the use of advanced artificial intelligence in addressing various operational tasks in both transmission and distribution networks.
A key component of the project will be the use of diverse data from European energy grids so that the models being developed can capture their structural, temporal, and operational characteristics. At the same time, the project envisions secure and interoperable data sharing in line with the Common European Energy Data Space.
Another key objective of AI.grids is to strengthen European technological sovereignty in the field of artificial intelligence. Rather than relying on general-purpose models developed outside the European energy sector, the goal is to establish a trustworthy European technology base that takes into account the specific characteristics of critical energy infrastructure, the European regulatory environment, and security and interoperability requirements.
