ISMORAIL: AI and a sensor network for smarter railway infrastructure diagnostics

The ISMORAIL project is launched, aiming to develop an intelligent diagnostic and information system for railway infrastructure. The system will combine modern sensor networks and artificial intelligence methods for earlier detection of track problems and more accurate work with information on infrastructure loads.

The project focuses in particular on the development of advanced diagnostics of track damage caused by the undesirable state of passing rolling stock, using AI tools. The solution should also include accurate and reliable measurement of track loads while taking into account changes in the subsoil/superstructure characteristics and identification of problematic wagons in real time (including areas such as dynamic weighing - WIM and support for predictive maintenance).

Benefits for railway management and operation (expected)

  • Earlier warning of emerging track degradation and risk conditions
  • More targeted maintenance and better prioritization of interventions based on data
  • Higher safety and reliability thanks to faster identification of problems (including "problem" wagons)
  • More accurate measurement of load and its changes over time to support decision-making and planning

Consortium and solution time
The solution is provided by a consortium: VDT Technology a.s. (main participant), INSET s.r.o., Prague Advanced Technology and Research Innovation Center, a.s. and Brno University of Technology / Faculty of Civil Engineering.
